CLUTCH
AND
SHOCK ABSORBER
UNIT
The shock absorber unit which
is
incorporated in the clutch is robustly constructed

and
is
designed to give many thousands of miles of trouble free service.
Briefly,
it
operates in the following manner: the drive
is
transmitted through the clutch plates
i
in the normal manner, then through the drive rubbers to the four armed spider
1
i
which
is
keyed to the clutch shaft; this also being keyed to the gearbox mainshaft.
The spider is free to oscillate inside the clutch centce but is restrained by eight
I
rubber pads, two on either side of each arm. The larger of these pads is the drive

rubber, the smaller the rebound. The drive and rebound rubber efiectively level
1
out all the engine speed variations at low speeds, providing an extremely smooth and
pleasant torque, which reduces transmission wear due to the absence of "snatch".

I
REPLACEMENT OF THE
CORiC
INSERTS
The clutch is the multi-plate cork type incorporating a transmission shock absorber.
The pressure on the plates
is
made by four equaliy disposed springs which can be
varied by screwing in or out the four slotted nuts which secure them. The clutch
It
is
not recommended that replacement of the cork inserts in the clutch plates is
made by the owner.
This operation calls for precision and special equipment
to
reduce the new inserts to the correct thickness at each side of the plate and to
ensure an even overall sudace. The better method
is
to exchange the old plates
for service replacement plates
at
the nearest Triumph Dealer.
!
is designed
to
operate in oil and
it
is
therefore essential that the oil level in the
I
i
chaincase is maintained otherwise the cork inserts may burn and disintegrate under
I
heavy loading. Always use the recommended grade of oil (SAE 20 see lubricant
chart, page 200). If a heavier grade of
oil
is
used, the clutch plates w~ll not readily
I
separate when disengaged which will cause difficult and noisy gear selection when
I
the gearchange pedal
is
operated.
Even with the thinner grades of oil, the kick-
starter should always be operated a few times with the clutch extracted before
I
attempting to start the engine. This procedure ensures that the plates separate
I
freely when a gear selection
is
made.
