FITTING THE FRONT
WHEEL
TO
THE FRONT
FORK
The front wheel must be fitted carefully. otherwise the efficient working of the front
fork will be impaired. The split left hand cover tube lug which houses the pinch
bolt, will align itself correctly on the spindle if the instructions are adhered to.
Spindle. Check that the spindle
is
a good push
fit
in the split left hand cover tube
lug. If the spindle
is
too tight, clean out the lug and remove any burrs or enamel.
If this
is
not effective, open up the split lug gap. This procedure must be carried
out to ensure that the left hand fork leg aligns itself on the spindle sleeve.
Wheel. Position the wheel between the fork legs and secure in position by passing
the spindle through the split lug into the wheel and through the other lug. Do not
use force, or both the spindle and the lugs will be damaged.
Anchor Plate. Position the anchor plate and secure the mudguard bridge support
clip with the anchor bolt.
Spindle
Nut.
Fit the spindle nut and plain washer and tighten up.
Do not tighten
the pinch bolt on the opposite fork leg yet.
Front Brake Lever
and
Cable. Re-fit the brake cable adjuster to the abutment
on the anchor plate and assemble the pivot bolt to the cable fork and brake lever
arm.
Push a split pin through the pivot bolt and retain
it
by bending the ends over.
Front Stand. Swing the stand back into position and tighten the securing nut.
Spindle Pinch Bolt.
Check that
this bolt
is
loose and that the left hand fork leg
can slide on the spindle sleeve.
Sit astride the machine, and, applying the front
brake, work the fork up and down five or six times. This positions the fork leg on
the spindle, and prevents any binding between the stanchions and the cover tubes.
Tighten up the spindle pinch bolt.
If
this procedure is not adopted, the fork action will be stiff and members
distorted. (See Fig.
45).
