CRANKCASE
maximum'rigidiry.
The crankshaft
is
supported by two heavy duty ball bearings in
either crankcase half. The camshafts are housed fore and aft in the upper part of
the crankcase and they operate in phosphor bronze bushes. The camshaft fitted
to operate the inlet push rods (both camshafts are identical)
is
so designed, that
crankcase pressure is released to atmosphere through a rotary disc valve. Located
in the timing side crankcase are the timing gears, ancillary drive and the oil pump.
FLYWHEEL AND CRANKSHAFT
The balanced two throw crankshaft, and flywheel are bolted together to make a
complete unit. The "H" section connecting rods are forged from
RR56
Hiduminium
alloy and the bottom caps are steel stampings lined with white metal, the two parts
being bolted together with two high-tensile bolts.
CYLINDER BLOCK
Two types of cylinder block are employed, one being cast from high grade cast-iron
and the other die cast from aluminium alioy. The
latter
is
fitted with steel liners
which can be replaced when the existing liners are worn beyond their maximum
re-bore limits. Each cylinder
drovides location for the tappet blocks and tappets.
PISTONS
The pistons are die-cast "LO-EX" aluminium alioy, each fitted with two compression
and one scraper ring. The guvdgeon pins are
a
tight push
fit
in the pistons- and are
held in position by spring steel circlips.
CYLINDER HEAD
The cylinder head houses the inlet and exhaust valves In separate combustion
chambers. Two separate rocker boxes complete with the rockers are bolted to
the head to operate the valves. As with the cylinder blocks, the heads are made
from either cart-iron or die-cast aluminium alloy. The latter have cast-iron valve
seats cart into the head durlng the manufacture.
LUBRICATION
Dry sump lubrication Is employed.
The system
is
operated by a twin plunger
reciprocating oil pump.
