1. Checking the battery condition
DANGER
T
o avoid the possibility of a battery explosion:
For refillable-type battery, follow the following
instructions.
Do not use or charge the refillable-type battery
if the fluid level is below the “LOWER” (lower-
limit-level) mark. Otherwise, the component
parts of battery may prematurely deteriorate,
which may shorten the service life of battery or
cause an explosion. Check the fluid level
regularly and add distilled water as required so
that the fluid level is between the “UPPER” and
“LOWER” levels.
WARNING
T
o avoid personal injury or death:
Never remove the vent caps while the engine is
running.
Keep the electrolyte away from eyes, hands,
and clothes. If you are spattered with the
electrolyte, wash it away completely with water
immediately and get medical attention.
Wear the eye protection and rubber gloves
when working around the battery.
Before inspecting or dismounting the battery,
be sure to turn off the engine and turn the
starter switch to the [STOP] position.
When removing the battery, always disconnect
the negative ground cable first. When installing
a battery, always connect the ground cable last.
Proper order to connect the ground cables
prevents a possible explosion caused by
sparks.
Always wear eye protection when working with
the battery.

(B) Lower level
Mishandling the battery shortens the service life and
adds to maintenance costs.
The
original battery is maintenance free, but needs
some servicing.
If the battery is weak, the engine will be difficult to start
and the lights will be dim. It is important to check the
battery periodically.
The battery is in the left side cover. See Opening the
side cover on page 95 for how to open the left side
cover.

refillable type. If the indicator turns white, do
not charge the battery but replace it with

1.1 Charging the battery
WARNING
T
o avoid personal injury or death:
When the battery is being activated, hydrogen
and oxygen gases in the battery are extremely
explosive. Keep open sparks and flames away
from the battery at all times, especially when
charging the battery.
When charging the battery, make sure that the
vent caps are securely in place if equipped.
When disconnecting the cable from the battery,
start with the negative terminal first.
When connecting the cable to the battery, start
with the positive terminal first.
Never check the battery charge by placing a
metal object across the posts.
Use a voltmeter or hydrometer.
