16 Monitoring BIS
16.1 Introduction
Bispectral Index (BIS) monitoring helps to monitor the level of consciousness of a patient
under general anesthesia or sedation in the OR and ICU. The BIS sensor is placed on the
patient’s forehead to capture electroencephalographic (EEG) signals from which several
numerics are derived, including a single BIS between 100 (wide awake) and zero (absence of
brain electrical activity) that represents the patient’s level of consciousness. This enables
clinicians to customize the precise type and amount of anesthetic or sedative medication that
each patient needs.
