3.9 Chemicals and Cycles
Maximizing the efficiency and the life of the washer/disinfector is predicated on the type of water and the cleaning
chemistries used. The corrosive effects of water (deionized, soft and hard water) and contaminants found in water
(such as hardness cations, corrosive anions, metals, etc.) can shorten the useful life of both instrumentation and
equipment. Hard water can result in scale formation as well, which can deposit on both equipment and
instrumentation. It is also important for the cleaning chemistries utilized to have low and controlled foam to maintain
the pressure in the washer/disinfector for adequate impingement and effective rinsing.
Recommendations for cleaning chemistries should take into consideration the make-up water characteristics, soil load
and the type and composition (stainless steel, aluminum, plastics, etc.) of instrumentation or utensils to be cleaned.
Cleaning chemistries used should maintain effectiveness regardless of water quality, type or the contaminants
contained in the water and they should be formulated to help prevent corrosion of instrumentation and equipment due
to the use of water in the cleaning process.
NOTE: Pump 1 is dedicated to enzymatic cleaners; pump 2, pump 4 and pump 5 to detergents or neutralizers; and
pump 3 to lubricant to be injected.
Using Prolystica Ultra Concentrate HP Chemicals
The following Prolystica® Ultra Concentrate HP Chemicals are recommended for processing loads in the
washer/disinfector. All are easy-to-rinse ultra concentrates using ten times less product than traditional STERIS
chemicals. See Table 3-4 for pre-programmed cycles use and chemicals and Table 3-5 for detailed Prolystica® Ultra
Concentrate HP chemicals specifications.
NOTE: Certain products may not be available in your area. Contact STERIS for product availability and ordering
information.
IMPORTANT: STERIS does not promote, recommend or endorse the use of any other type of chemical additives in the
processing of articles in the washer/disinfector, such as alcohol rinses or liquid germicides including sodium hypochlorite
solution (bleach).
to in Section 5.1, Cycle and Control Value Programming — General give important information about the parameters within
the cycles such as temperature, injection rate, etc. Use this chart as a reference while processing cycles.
