6 Functional Description of the Ethernet Modules

6.5 AUI module EI 812F
The Ethernet module EI 812F is designed for battery buffering of the
CPU boards PM 802F and PM 803F with software version 7.1 and
higher.
6.5.1 Concept
This section aims at giving you some module-specific characteris-
tics. For general features and handling instructions that are com-
mon to all Ethernet modules please refer to Section 6.1.
The AUI module is designed for connecting the AC 800F to the
system bus. It is used for installations where a 10Base2 cabling is
not sufficient due to the required performance or EMC, or if an al-
ready existing cabling needs to be considered.
Contrary to the 10Base2 module, the so-called MAU (Medium At-
tachment Unit) - better known under the name transceiver - is not
located on the module. The standardized AUI interface of the AUI
module, however, allows you to connect any off-the-shelf trans-
ceiver. With this, any Ethernet medium connected via these trans-
ceivers will be available.
A LAN controller is the heart of the EI 812F module. Its special
hardware interface is adapted to the CPU board processor in an
optimal way. The LAN controller provides for the entire preproc-
essing of the transmit and receive data in accordance with the
Ethernet standard. As a result, only the net data is communicated
through the CPU board (via DMA), and a considerable load is
taken off the main processor. The synchronization with the main
processor is realized through the DMA control signals and interrupt
signals.
The standardized AUI interface has no electrically isolated output. The
electrical isolation is realized in the connected transceiver.
