Smart devices like Google Home are great for finding out about
news, but there’s a lot to be said for alternative voices. After all, if
you read one newspaper, you tend to get one point of view. So
it’s great that more and more news providers are preparing stories
specifically for smart assistants such as Amazon Alexa or Google
Home. Often these services are just voice representations of an
RSS feed said in the Assistant’s voice. Sometimes it will play you a
bulletin that’s pre-recorded, maybe an hour beforehand. As in the
BBC’s case, this is often a simple, UK-focused bulletin that sounds as
if it was prepared for radio but is different than those found on the
national radio networks.
Naturally you can change your default news sources in the
Google Home app – tap Menu then More settings. And then, under
‘Services’, tap News. You’ll see a list of news sources that will play
when you say, “OK Google, listen to news.”
