If you try to enter a V.D.L. compensation number while an Air Sensor is co nne cted to the
Measurement Display
unit, the value you enter will be ignored, and the va lue derived from the
Air Sensor 's inputs will be u sed.
When an Air Sensor error occ ur s, the appropriate me ssage immediately appears on the display
(unless there is a higher
priority error) and the next press of the V.D.L. key witl yield "C Error"
indicating that an error co ndition exists w ith one of the air se nsor meas uremen t s. Su ccess ive
pre
sses will display the valid air s en so r data, and pa ss over the invalid se n so r data.
NO TE
Co nne cting or disconnecting the Air Se n so r during a meas ure-
ment may re s ult in a measurement error.
More About th e RE S OL key
This key allows you to se le ct or display the number of s ignifi ca nt decimal pla ces di splayed on the
Measurement Display unit during a meas urement. Thi s key also se ts the "s moothing" fun c tion
"o n" or "o ff" .

To display the current re so lution value, just press the R ESD l ke y. Pre ss ing the key again s end s the
laser Meas
urem ent Sys tem ba ck to the cu rrent meas urement mode.
Re so l ution limit s are different for each measureme nt mode , and, except as noted below, English
unit re so lution is one place greater than the metri c equivalent. You ca n see this by viewing the
current resolution and
sw itching the ENGLISH/ METRIC sw itch on the Meas urement Di splay
unit' s rear panel from one position to the other. Exce pt as noted bel ow, changing the
ENGLI SH/ METRIC switch setting does not change the s mo o thing func tion .

S MOOTHING
Meas ur ement d ata ca n be averaged by the Mea s urement Di sp la y unit to redu ce the am o unt of
number -changing you see in the di sp lay. This is called "s m ooth ing ".
To turn sm oo thing " o n ", enter the resolution number you want, as a po s itive nurnber (i.e., ju st
enter the
number ).
To turn smoothing "off ", enter the reso luti on number you want as a ne ga tive number (i .e.,
precceded by the "_" key in th e ENTRY key g roup ).
