3.22.1 Overview
IEEE 802.1X is a port-based network access control standard that provides secure access
services for LANs.
On an IEEE 802 LAN, a user can directly access network resources without authentication
and authorization as long as it can connect to a network device. This uncontrolled
behavior can bring security risks to the network. The IEEE 802.1X protocol was proposed
to address the security issues on an IEEE 802 LAN.
The IEEE 802.1X protocol supports three security applications: Authentication,
Authorization, and Accounting, abbreviated as AAA.
