GENERATOR DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING (Continued)

CHECK VOLTAGE DROP IN A CIRCUIT

Turn key to ON position.
l
Measure voltage between test point A on the voltage
regulator and the positive (+) battery post.
l
Is voltage drop less than 0.25 volt?
Yes

No
b
GO to D2.
REPAIR excess voltage drop
in Circuit 36 (Y/W). CHECK
fuse or fuse link and
connectors in Circuit 36 and
SERVICE as required.
D2 1 CHECK VOLTAGE DROP IN I CIRCUIT

l
Measure voltage at wiring harness I terminal, Circuit Yes
904 (LG/R).
No
NOTE: Voltage regulator must be connected to wiring
harness for this test.
l
Is voltage greater than 1 volt?

GO to D3.
REPAIR high resistance in
Circuit 904 (LG/R).
03 1 CHECK FOR POOR GROUNDS

Yes
b
No
b
l
Check for poor ground connections between voltage
regulator and generator, generator and engine, or
engine and battery.
l
Are all ground connections clean and tight?
GO to D4.
CLEAN or REPAIR grounds
as required.
D4 1 CHECK FOR FIELD CIRCUIT DRAIN

l
Turn key to OFF position.
l
Measure voltage at test point F on the voltage
regulator.
l
Is voltage at test point F equal to battery voltage?
Yes
b
No
b
Generator is OK. REPLACE
voltage regulator.
GO to D5.
D5 1 CHECK FOR GROUNDED SLIP RING

l
Remove generator from vehicle.
l
Remove voltage regulator.
l
Measure resistance from each generator slip ring to the
generator housing.
l
Is resistance from either slip ring to housing less
than 200 ohms?
Yes
b
No
b
If grease or dirt has
accumulated near the slip
rings, CLEAN the slip rings
and RECHECK resistance.
If still less than 200 ohms,
REPLACE generator.
REPLACE voltage regulator
PINPOINTTEST E: INDICATOR LAMP OFF, KEY ON, ENGINE NOT RUNNING

GO to E2.
REPAIR open in Circuit 904
(LG/R).

Remove three-pin voltage regulator connector.
l
Turn key to ON position.
l
Measure voltage at wiring harness I terminal, Circuit
904 (LG/R).
l
Is voltage greater than 0 volts?

E2 CHECK FOR BURNED OUT BULB
I
Yes
No
REMOVE jumper wire. GO
to E3.
REPLACE bulb or REPAIR
high resistance in bulb
socket or Circuit 904 (LG/R)
l
Connect wiring harness I terminal, Circuit 904 (LG/R) to
ground with a jumper wire.
l
Is indicator lamp on?

E3
1 CHECK FOR POOR GROUNDS
I
connections between voltage
regulator and generator, generator and engine, or
engine and battery.
Are all ground connections clean and tight?
Yes
b
No
b
GO to E4.
CLEAN or REPAIR grounds
as required.
