– Lean the motorcycle on the side stand.

– Shift gear to neutral.

– Push the chain upward at a distance from the chain sliding guard and determine the

chain tension.

The upper chain section must be taut.

Chain wear is not always even, so you should repeat this measurement at differ-

ent chain positions.

Chain tension 5mm (0.2in)

Distance to chain sliding guard 30mm (1.18in)

» If the chain tension does not meet specifications:

– Adjust the chain tension. ( S. 79)

9.24Adjusting chain tension

Warning

Danger of accidents Danger caused by incorrect chain tension.

– If the chain tension is too high, the components of the secondary power train (chain, engine sprocket, rear sprocket, bearings

in transmission and rear wheel) are under additional load. Apart from premature wear, in extreme cases the chain can rupture

or the countershaft of the transmission can break. On the other hand, if the chain is loose, it can fall off the engine sprocket or

the rear sprocket and block the rear wheel or damage the engine. Check for correct chain tension and adjust if necessary.

  The engine may not turn when the starter button is pressed due to several reasons: it could be an operating error, the battery might be discharged (in which case, recharge the battery and check for the cause of discharging), a fuse (1, 2, 3, or 4) could be blown (then change the fuses), the main fuse might be burned out (then change the main fuse), there may be a defect in the ignition/steering lock or emergency OFF switch (then have it checked), a defect in the safety start system (then have the safety start system checked), or there is no ground connection present (then check the ground connection).
