7. ICMP
7.2 ICMP HDD
About ICMP HDD
The three HDDs (local storage) in the ICMP, a re set up in a RAID 5 configuration. This storage technique, that c ombines m ultiple
HDD components into a logical unit, mana ges enough redundancy information to c ontinue to operate properly after the loss of one
HDD.

CAUTION: A RAID 5 configuration with three HDDs allows a maximum loss of one d isk. With the si
multaneous
loss of more than one HDDs, data is lost and the RAID must b e completely initialized again after replacement
of the defect HDDs w ith new HD Ds!
About degraded mode
When a RAID array experiences the failure of one disk, it enters in degraded mode. Content storage and playback remains available
on the ICMP.
CAUTION: Th e loss of on e disk causes no serious consequences on t he ICMP. B ut action must be taken
quickly because the loss of a seco nd disk will make t he R AID system broken. The main cause of the total loss
of RAID is due in most cases to the loss of the seco nd disk while t
he first has not been rebuilt!
A failed drive should be replaced as soon as possible.
About “RAID recovery” process
The restoration from degraded to normal condition of the RA ID 5 system is done automatically. When the RAID controller detects a
new HDD to replace the failed disk the recovery pr ocedure starts automatically.
CAUTION: The autom atic process does not wo rk if more than one disk is lost. In that case the RAID must be
completely initialized again!
About RAI D broken
When more than one HDD is ou t of order, the RAID is considered as ’broken’ and the content is lost. The failed HDDs m ust be
changed and a new RA ID must be created.
Exchange or re-use of a disk s et
It’s possible to h ave s everal sets of di
sks with one ICM P or to reuse a c omplete set of disks coming from another projector with
ICMP.Itissufficient to insert the three HDDs, from a v alid RAID array, and let the system explor e the new RAID. The mounting order
of the HDDs and the HDD slots do not matter. O f course, when using HDDs from another ICMP it is necessary to retrieve from the
content distributor the KDMs corre
sponding to the content and the new ICMP.
HDD storage capacity
Make sure t hat all HDDs in the IC MP HDD set have the same storage capacity. See label on top of the HDD to know the s torage
capacity.
HDD storage
The m aximum recom mended storage period for the drive in a non-o perational environm ent is 90 days. Drives should be stored in the
original unopen ed shipping pac kaging wheneve r possible. Once the dr ive is removed from the o riginal packaging the recomme nded
maximum period between drive opera tion cycles is 30 days. During any storage period the drive non-operational temperature,
humidity, w et bulb, atmo spheric c onditions, shock, v ibration, magnetic and electrical field specifications should be followed.
