Using the ftp File Transfer Program
The
ftp
le transfer program allows you to copy les bet
ween your lo cal
system and remote systems and among remote HP-UX, UNIX, and non-UNIX
network hosts that support ARP
A services. The
ftp
program not only allows
you to perform remote le cop
ying , but also facilitates le managemen
t
operations suchaschanging, listing, creating, and deleting directories on a
remote system for whichyou haveavalid login or account.
Using
ftp
you can copy a local le to a remote le or vice v
ersa. You can
also append a lo cal le to the end of a remote le. The le to whic
hyou are
copying can have either the same or a dieren
t directory path and/or name as
the one on the originating system.
Preparing to Use ftp
If the host system you wish to use is congured for anonymous ftp, you will
not need an account to use ftp in public directories. Anon
ymous ftp do es not
require entries in your
/etc/hosts
le.
If you wish to have more general access to the host system, do the following:
Make sure that your
/etc/hosts
le contains entries for the remote hosts
with whichyou will communicate.
Ask the system administrator for each remote host to giveyou an account
and a password, so that you can ftp in and access more general directories.
The following pro cedures will assume that you have such an account.
