Chapter 3 Functional descriptions
SMSO-2-02.03- 15.07.03 29
3 Functional descriptions
3.1 Connections (Supply / Disposal)
3.1.1 General
The connections to the supply and disposal networks differ,
depending on the configuration of the machine and the op-
tional features installed. However, they must always be made
in accordance with local regulations for the supply and dis-
posal networks concerned. The interfaces with the supply and
disposal networks that are most likely to be used are de-
scribed below. The section entitled “Technical Data” contains
drawings and plans on the customer’s installation.
3.1.2 Rating plate
Every machine is supplied with two identical rating plates. One
of these is located in the grounds container compartment on
the left-hand side. The other is on the outlet plate at the bot-
tom left (in older machines it is attached to the PCB section on
the floor of the framing).
The rating plates contain all the important data required for
making connections, and for maintenance (service, repair,
spare parts). In particular take note of the instruction number;
this is the number of the control system diagram sheet, con-
taining the details of electrical connection. In some cases, the
serial number is important in order to ascertain the correct
spare part for maintenance requirements.

3.1.3 Drinking water connection
The interface to the drinking water connection to the mains
supply is the water connection hose. It is 1.4 m long measured
from the machine casing and is provided with a G 3/8” con-
nection nut (internal thread).
All systems, including the refrigerator, are supplied via this
connection. The pressure of the mains water supply should be
between 1.0 bar (minimum) and 3.0 bar (maximum); the
nominal value is 3.0 bar. This pressure is described as local
pressure. If the local pressure is higher, the pressure must be
reduced to this value, (see section entitled “Technical data,
customer side installations”)
As an option the water connection can be fitted to a drinking
water reservoir with a corresponding level monitoring system
(optional "trolley").
3.1.4 Water specifications
To operate the coffee machine, and for optimum coffee qual-
ity, the drinking water should possess the following chemical
properties:
Hardness: 5-7° dH (°German hardness)
8-12° fH (
o
French hardness)
Conversion factor: 1° dH = 1.79° fH
Chlorine content: less than 100 mg/litre
pH value: approx. 7 (= neutral)
Conductance min. approx. 100 µS (Siemens
microns)
The conductance can be measured only on a special measur-
ing instrument.
If there is a variance in data it is essential to take measures to
achieve these values (water softener, de-chlorination unit etc.)
Local regulations must be observed.
3.1.5 Water filter / Decalcifier
In principle the coffee machine must be attached to the mains
supply via a water filter. This prevents damage to the machine
and also prevents machine failures caused by solid particles
reaching the machine through the mains water system.
If the water hardness is too high, a water softener / decalcifier
must be installed.
