Chapter 3 Functional descriptions
SMSO-2-02.03- 15.07.03 43
3.2.9 Non-return valve
The non-return valve is a stop valve that ensures that water
flows in one direction only, preventing it from returning in the
reverse direction. Non-return valves are installed anywhere
where it is necessary to prevent hot water from flowing back
into the cold water pipes as a result of the higher pressure.
This type of valve can be installed at any position in the ma-
chine, because the spring always keeps the closing element in
its seat.
Function
The closing element is pressed onto the valve seat by means
of spring-resistance. If the water pressure on the inlet side
exceeds the closing pressure of the spring, the valve opens
and water flows through. The spring presses in the opposite
direction onto the closing element and the valve remains
closed.
Non-return valve
1 Housing (in two parts, screw connection)
2 Valve seat
3 Closing element
4 Flat packing
5 Pressure spring (depending on opening pressure)
Special feature Take note of the direction of installation (see
the arrow on the housing).
MACHINE FAULT
Non-return valves have only one direction
of flow. If they are installed counter to the
direction of flow, the water system could
malfunction. The direction of flow is indi-
cated by means of an arrow on the housing.
When installing a valve make sure that it is
installed in the correct direction.
Technical data
Opening pressure: min. 0.1 bar
max. 0.8 bar
Maintenance
Most frequent faults
Calcium deposits or soiling:
The flat packing or the valve seat is calcified or defective;
not water-tight against the direction of flow; hot water is
flowing back into the cold water pipe.
Check
Blow through: (with your mouth). In the direction of flow the
valve should offer only slight resistance. Against the direction
of flow, the valve should not allow any air to pass through.
Service intervals
After every 45,000 coffee servings or after 12 months of op-
eration check the following:
Check for calcium deposits, and for seal against the
direction of flow (arrow)
After 36 months of operation, replace:
the complete non-return valve.
