1 - Presentation
LEAP objectives
LEAP - Life Expectancy Analysis Program - is an analysis program carried out directly by the customer or by
ABB technicians that is able to assess the state of health of the circuit-breaker, with the aim of:
extending the life of the circuit-breaker
preventing premature faults
Characteristics of the analysis
Different types of analysis are available depending on the requirements of the customer.
The basic analysis always considers the following parameters:
environmental conditions in which the circuit-breaker is installed (e.g. application, temperature, dust,
humidity, salinity)
usage conditions of the circuit-breaker (e.g. number of operations per year, average current capacity -
percentage of real current compared to the rated current -, position in relation to the load)
The most complete analysis also considers many other parameters, including:
level of wear found during maintenance
the Trip History related to overloads or short circuits
the maintenance actions carried out by the ABB technician
Content of the LEAP report
The result of a LEAP analysis is always a report that contains:
details on the installation in which the circuit-breaker is inserted
suggested frequency of maintenance based on the data encountered
graphical representation of the state of health of the circuit-breaker
The graphical representation consists of the following:
Four coloured areas (green, yellow, orange and red) distributed over the entire diagram. Like a traffic light,
the various colours represent the risk of a circuit-breaker fault (green area = contained fault risk, red area
= high fault risk).
A curve that represents the state of the circuit-breaker over the years. The green part of the curve represents
the life of the circuit-breaker from the moment when it was produced to the moment when it was installed.
It is important to note that even when a circuit-breaker is not in use also gets worn in any case.The blue
part of the curve, a continuation of the green curve, represents the life of the circuit-breaker in activity.
