NOTE:Thefollowingtestcanalsobeperformedthroughthecontrollerofthewheelchairalong
witharemoteprogrammer.Refertotheelectronicsmanualsuppliedwitheachwheelchair.
Oldbatterieslosetheirabilitytostoreandreleasepower,duetoincreasedinternal
resistance.Thismeansthatasyoutrytotakepowerfromthebattery,someofthatpower
isusedupintheprocessofpassingthroughthebattery,resultinginlessvoltageatthe
posts.Themorepowerdrawn,thelowerthevoltageavailable.Whenthislostvoltage
dropstheoutput1.0voltsunderload(2.5forapair),replacethebatteries.
Tospotthisproblem,testbatteriesunderload.
Useadigitalvoltmetertocheckbatterychargelevelatthechargerconnector.Itislocated
onthejoystick.
NOTE:READtheseinstructionsCAREFULLYandthemanufacturer’sinstructionsonthe
digitalvoltmeterbeforeusingthedigitalvoltmeter.
NOTE:InvacarerecommendsthatONLYaqualifiedtechnicianperformthistest.
1. EnsurethatpowerisOFF.
2. Makesurebatteryisfullycharged.Anextremelydischargedbatterywillexhibitthe
samesymptomsasabadone.
3. Removethefootrestsfromthewheelchair.
4. Connectthevoltmeterleadstothechargerportonthewheelchairasshownin
FIGURE 3.1onpage34.Mostdigitalvoltmetersarenotaffectedbypolarity,however,
analogmeters(meterswithswingingneedles)canbeandshouldbeusedcarefully.
Agoodmeterreadingshouldbe25.5to26VDC.
WARNING
When performing STEPS 5 and 6, ensure feet are clear from casters and wall
otherwise injury may occur.
5. Sitinwheelchairandplacefeetagainstawall,workbenchorotherstationaryobject.
6. TurnthepowerONandcarefullypushthejoystickforward,tryingtodrivethe
wheelchairthroughthestationaryobject.
NOTE:Thisputsaheavyloadonthebatteriesastheytrytopushthroughthestationaryobject.
If
thewheelsspin,havetwoindividuals(oneoneacharm)applyasmuchdownwardpressureas
possibleonthearmsofthewheelchair.
7. Readthemeterwhilethemotorsarestraining,nolongerthan3to4seconds,to
determinethevoltageunderload.
NOTE:Ifthevoltagedropsmore
than2.5voltsfr omapairoffullychargedbatterieswhileunder
load,theyshouldbereplacedregardlessoftheunloadedvoltages.
