Inspecting/Replacing Motor Brushes
NOTE:Forthisprocedure,refertoFIGURE 10.3onpage100.
NOTE:Itisveryimportanttonotewhichwaythebrushcomesoutofthemotor.ThebrushMUST
beplacedintothemotorexactlythesamewaytoensuregoodcontactwiththe
commutator.
1. Turnpoweroff.
2. Removethemotor.RefertoRemoving/InstallingtheMotoronpage 98.
NOTE:TherearefourmotorbrushesonM91/M94motorslocatedunderthebrushcapsonthe
motorhousing.Ifthesecapsarehardtoremovetheyareeitherovertightenedorthemotorhas
becomeveryhot.Letmotorscool.Ifcapsstillcannotberemoved,itisrecommendedthatthemotor
besenttoInvacareTechnicalServicesforinspection/repair.
3. Removethebrushcapsecuringthemotorbrushintothemotorhousing.
4. Removethemotorbrushandperformthefollowing:
A. Inspectthecommutator(notshown)fordamage.
B. Inspectthemotorbrushthoroughlyforexcessivewearorchipsinthebrushand
performoneofthefollowing:
•Ifmotorbrushisingoodcondition,(i.e.,theendofthebrushesaresmoothand
shiny),reinstallexistingbrush.
•Ifmotorbrushisinbadcondition,brushiswornordamaged,discard
immediatelyandinstallnewbrush.
5. Reinstallmotorbrushandbrushcapintothemotorhousing.
6. RepeatSTEPS3‐5untilallfourmotorbrusheshavebeeninspected/replaced.
7. Reinstallthemotor.RefertoRemoving/InstallingtheMotoronpage 98.
NOTE:RepeatSTEPS2‐7fortheoppositemotor.
