1. Open the discharge guard, and remove the rear cover clip and rear cover.
2. Position the shift lever to minimum speed, and engage the drive clutch lever as it is.
3. Make sure that slot [1] of the control arm aligning with index mark [2] of the case as
shown.
4. If adjustment is necessary, keep the levers in this position, undo and adjust the nuts.
Lever clearance 5 - 10 mm
5. Run the engine and operate the shift lever. Check to ensure the transmission is
shifting smoothly.
6. When installing the rear cover [3], be sure that the claws of the cover are located
securely.
Maximum engine speed
3 100 rpm
Mower driving speed 0.85 - 1.65 m/s

3.8 Valve clearance
NOTE: Valve clearance inspection and adjustment must be performed with the engine
cold.
a. Inspection
1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
2. Turn the crankshaft until the piston is at top dead center on its compression stroke
(both valves fully closed).
3. Check intake and exhaust valve clearances by inserting a feeler gauge between the
valve stem and the rocker arm.
Valve clearance
IN: 0.13 - 0.17 mm
EX: 0.18 - 0.22 mm
b. Adjustment
1. With the piston at top dead center of its compression stroke, hold the rocker arm pivot
and loosen the pivot lock nut.
2. Turn the rocker arm pivot to obtain the specified intake and exhaust valve clearances.
3. Hold the rocker arm pivot and tighten the lock nut.
4. Recheck the valve clearance with a feeler gauge after tightening the lock nut.
5. Install the cylinder head cover, after adjustment.
