2-9 Character String Display
The contents of character string memory table entries are displayed as charac-
ter strings.
Alphanumerics and symbols can be displayed. It is also possible to display
marks (character codes FF20 to FFFF
H) in character strings.
There are two methods for referencing a character string memory table entry
whose contents are to be displayed, as follows:
• Direct reference (reference of the number of the relevant character string
memory table entry)
Allocated word
(character string memory table entry 51)

Reference: When the PT is in NT20S or NT30/620 compatible mode, image and library
codes can be included in character string memory table entries. An image or li-
brary display might extend beyond the edge of the PT’s screen when it is dis-
played by changing the contents of a character string memory table entry within a
character string display. Refer to Appendix C for details on the NT20S and
NT30/620 compatible modes (page 451).
Restrictions
• A maximum of 256 character string displays can be registered for one screen.
(Same for window screen.) For an overlapping screen comprising 8 child
screens, the maximum is 1,024.
There is no restriction on the number of character string displays that can be
registered for one screen data file: any number can be registered as long as
the data file capacity is not exceeded. However, if a large number of elements
are registered, check that the restrictions on element display are complied with
by referring to Display Restrictions (page 431).
• The maximum number of character string display that can be displayed using
indirect reference is 100 per screen combined with the number of numeral dis-
play that is displayed using indirect reference.
(Same restriction applies to overlapping screens or when displaying window
screens.)
• The following numbers of characters can be displayed in one character string
display, depending on the scale.
