Battery Service
The battery is the heart of the electrical system. With
regularandproperservice,batterylifecanbeextended.
Additionally, battery and electrical component failure
can be prevented.
CAUTION
When working with batteries, use extreme cau-
tion to avoid splashing or spilling electrolyte.
Electrolytecandestroyclothingandburnskinor
eyes. Always wear safety goggles and a face
shield when working with batteries.

Battery Removal and Installation (Fig. 57)
1. Raise and support hood.
2. Loosen and remove negative(--) cable frombattery.
Afternegative(--)cable isremoved,loosen andremove
positive (+) cable.
3. Loosen flange nut that secures battery retainer.
4. Carefully remove battery from machine.
5. Install battery in reverse order making sure to con-
nectandtightenpositive(+)cabletobatterybeforecon-
necting negative (--) cable.
NOTE: Before connecting the negative (ground) cable
to the battery, connect a digital multimeter (set to DC
Amps)betweenthenegativebattery postand thenega-
tive (ground) cable connector. The reading should be
lessthan 0.1amp. Ifthereading is0.1amp ormore,the
machine’s electrical system should be tested for short
circuits or faulty components and repaired.
6. Lower and secure hood.
Battery Inspection and Maintenance
1. Performthe followinginspectionsand maintenance:
A. Check batterycase forcracks. Replacebattery if
cracked or leaking.

B. Checkbatteryterminalsforcorrosion.Ifcorrosion
occurs at terminals, disconnect cables. Always dis-
connect negative(--) cable first.Clean cable clamps
and battery terminals separately. Reconnect c ables
with positive (+) cable first. Coat battery posts and
cable connectors with Battery Terminal Protector
(Toro Part No. 107--0392) or petroleum jelly to pre-
vent corrosion.
IMPORTANT: Before cleaning the battery, t ape
or block vent holes to the filler caps and make
sure the caps are on tightly.
C. Check forsigns of wetnessor leakageon the top
ofthebatterywhichmightindicatealooseormissing
filler cap, overcharging, loose terminal post or over-
filling.Also, checkbattery casefordirt andoil.Clean
the battery witha solution of baking soda andwater,
then rinse it with clean water.
D. Checkthatthec oversealisnotbrokenaway.Re-
place the battery if the seal is broken or leaking.
E. Checktheelectrolytelevelineachcell.Ifthelevel
is below the tops of the plates in any cell, fill all c ells
withdistilledwaterbetweentheminimumandmax-
imum fill lines. Charge at 15 to 25 amps for 15 min-
utes to allow sufficient mixing of the electrolyte (see
battery charging in this section).
