Introduction Bispectral Index (BIS) (Optional)
19 - 2 V Series Operating Instructions
19.1 Introduction
Bispectral index (BIS) is one of several technologies used to monitor depth of anesthesia. The V 12/V
21 monitors the depth of consciousness of a patient by using information derived from an
electroencephalogram (EEG) signal.
The BIS, a processed EEG variable, may be used as an aid in monitoring the effects of certain
anesthetic agents. Use of BIS monitoring to help guide anesthetic administration may be associated
with the reduction of the incidence of awareness with recall during general anesthesia or sedation.
The BISx module acquires two channels of EEG data and calculates a BIS number and other variables
from a single side of the brain. The BISx4 module, when used with a Bilateral sensor, acquires four
channels of EEG data and calculates BIS numbers and other variables for both the left and right sides
of the brain.
The BISx or BISx4 equipment must be used under the direct supervision of a licensed health care
practitioner or by personnel trained in its proper use.
This chapter describes the BIS parameter in detail, including how to configure BIS alarm limits,
configure the BIS parameter, and monitor BIS.
Patient Sizes
Intended patient types: Adult and Pediatric.
WARNING: The clinical utility, risk/benefit and application of the BIS component
have not undergone full evaluation in the pediatric population.
NOTE: The clinical utility, risk/benefit and application of the BIS component
have not undergone full evaluation in the pediatric population.
BIS Module Connector
The VPS module does not include the BIS parameter. The BIS parameter is available as a separate
module (as shown in FIGURE 19-1) used in conjunction with the BISx or BISx4 module. Refer to
"Measuring BIS" on page 19-11 for additional information.
