2.5 Explosions in the crankcase
Examples of explosions in the crankcase of diesel engines have shown that they can only occur
in special conditions, and thus do not occur frequently.
The cause of crankcase explosions is oil mist. Oil mist comes from components that have
become unusually hot.
The engine has oil mist detectors, refer to section 5.9.3 Oil mist detector.
Correct engine maintenance will help prevent explosions in the crankcase.
