2.3 Safety Instructions for Handling Beryllium
Beryllium safety issues apply only to X-ray detectors with beryllium X-ray entrance windows.
Beryllium is toxic if parts are inhaled or swallowed. With X-ray detectors, however, this is only
possible in the rare case of a window breaking. Special care must be taken with XFlash
®
detectors, as they do not contain enough vacuum to suck in the remains of a broken window.
In case of an accidental destruction of a beryllium window, gather all fragments thoroughly and
collect them using pieces of adhesive tape. The waste has to be labeled and disposed of
according to the local safety hazard regulations. Wear a filter mask during clean up.
2.4 Safety Requirements for the Place of Installation
Caution!
The M4 TORNADO has a weight of approximately 130 kg. Dropping the
instrument can cause significant injuries or completely damage the device.
The following safety measures must be observed when installing the instrument:
The instrument and the control computer must be placed on a stable and fixed support. A
dolly is not suitable as a measuring site.
The measurement site should not be exposed to intensive vibrations.
For areas with earthquake probability an earthquake kit is recommended.
The instrument is prepared for an indoor use for laboratory environment i.e. dry and normal
contaminated, no external water.
The measurement site should not be close to strong magnetic fields such as electric motors or
generators.
In the surroundings of the measurement site, there should not be any sources of splashing
water such as showers or washing sites.
The instrument should not be exposed to aggressive media at the measurement site.
The installation site of the instrument should only be accessible to authorized staff or must be
monitored.
Otherwise, the parameters defined in the technical specification guide or in the installation guide
apply to the installation site.
2.5 Radiation Protection
Danger!
Without the manufacturer’s radiation protection measures, the X-ray source
used inside the M4 TORNADO could cause health risks.
For instance, a direct exposure of the excitation beam over a period of several seconds could
cause severe damage of biological tissue. Contrary to such a “radiation injury” of a high dose over
a short period, a lower radiation exposure over a long period could increase the risk of cancer.
Observing the safety rules can prevent a risk of X-ray radiation for the operator due to the
measures taken by the manufacturer and the technical installations.
According to the Röntgenverordnung (RöV) – the German X-ray Ordinance - the M4 TORNADO
complies with a full protection system regarding its radiation protection data and the radiation
exposure of the operating staff.
