4 The M4 TORNADO system
4.1 Product Description
The M4 TORNADO is an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer that can be used for elemental
analysis of bulk materials but also for coating analysis (determination of thickness and
composition). The special analytical task for the M4 TORNADO is the analysis of small sample
areas which can be used for the examination of small particles and inclusions but also for
elemental distributions along a line (Line scan) and on areas (Mapping).
4.1.1 Product features
Large vacuum sample chamber
Excitation of small samples areas down to 25 µm due to poly-capillary X-ray optics
Exact sample positioning with help of fast and precise X-Y-Z-stage controlled by software and
mouse
Control of sample position by two video systems with different magnification (10x and 100x)
High count rate capability and spectroscopic resolution due to latest SD detector technology
(XFlash
®
)
Instrument control via graphic user interface (GUI) for easy handling with control functions for
the instrument like:
o excitation conditions (tube parameters, filters, measurement time)
o detector
o stage (position control)
o camera (magnification, illumination of sample chamber)
Measurement of spectra element distribution
Display of data (spectra, element distributions)
Quantification with standardless Fundamental-Parameter model for homogeneous samples
Quantification of layer systems based on Fundamental-Parameter model
Suitable for variable sample types and applications
Low operating costs
Fully radiation protected instrument according to German X-ray ordinance
4.1.2 Product versions
The M4 TORNADO is available in a basic version with several features that can be optionally
used to adapt the instrument to the analytical task.
These options are:
Additional X-ray tube for efficient excitation of special element groups (for example, tube with
another target material, tube with collimator for excitation of heavy elements)
Up to two detectors in the instrument to enhance the captured solid angle of fluorescence
radiation (improvement of counting statistics).
