6.4 Qualitative and quantitative Analysis
6.4.1 Element identification
6.4.1.1 Interactive element identification
The interactive element identification can be performed directly from the spectrum window or be
requested as the first step of an interactive quantitative spectrum analysis, executed e.g. after
clicking the button. The tools and procedures are the same in both cases.
The basic strategy is to assign all visible peaks in the X-ray spectrum to characteristic X-rays lines
of chemical elements possibly contained in the sample. The KLM line markers are displayed for
all elements added to the identification list, the length of these markers corresponds to the relative
peak height of the related peaks.

Method Description
The interactive element identification tool. To open
the identification tool, click the icon or just double
click into the spectrum window. The tool opens in form
of a semi-transparent dialog. The dialog provides
different operating modes, which can be selected by
clicking the tabs in the headline. The bottom line
controls, e.g. for clearing the complete selection,
adding elements by name, and controlling display of
line markers are the same for all operating modes.
Periodic table of elements. The table of elements is
the most comfortable way to input an already known or
expected qualitative composition. Any elements can be
freely selected or deselected just by clicking the
element symbol. Elements in the identification list are
highlighted in certain colours; line markers of the same
colour will appear in the spectrum window for all
characteristic X-ray lines of this element. This supports
“trial and error” identification of the unknown peaks.
Double clicking an element symbol (or clicking it with
the right mouse key) will open an option menu which
allows the line that should be used for quantification or
for mapping and the line width for intensity calculation
as well as the colour of the element symbol and KLM-
markers.
