4.2.2 Instrument control PC
The complete instrument is controlled by a PC. The PC requires a RAM of at least 4 GB (8 GB for
Windows
®
64) and a large hard-disk. As operating system both Windows
®
XP and Windows
®
7
(32 and 64 bits) can be used. The PC is connected to the instrument is via USB and Ethernet. As
peripheral units keyboard and mouse are required.
4.2.3 Vacuum system
The vacuum system consists of a diaphragm vacuum pump, the sensor and vent and the
controller. The pump evacuates the sample chamber within approx. 120 s to the standard
operating pressure of 20 mbar. The pump allows to evacuate the chamber to a predefined
endpressure.
As soon as the pump reaches the given pressure the pumping speed is reduced to compensate
only the leakage. In that status the pump runs quietly. Only when pumping against air in the
sample chamber, the pump is loud.
The pump is oil free, which avoids back diffusion oil from the pump into the sample chamber. That
could contaminate the sample or components of the instrument (detector, X-ray optics). The
pump is also maintenance free.
