Appendix 4. Abbreviations
AP4-3
WAN (Wide Area Network)
WAN refers to a network set across an area wider than that for LAN, which connects
computers located in a geographically long distance to exchange data.
It is often used as a term referring to the Internet.
Streaming
Streaming refers to a type of forwarding/playing method for multimedia files such as
those for audio or videos.
In normal cases, when files are downloaded, the user would need to open the file, but
playing the large files such as those for videos would take a long time.
By playing the file concurrently while downloading it, the user will be able to reduce
the waiting time significantly. This method is generally referred to as “streaming.”
Streaming IP Data service is a service whose bandwidth is guaranteed.
The communication speed is available from among 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, or 56 kbps, and
the guaranteed service is provided on an on demand basis. However, the service of
communication speed 256 kbps is not available for FELCOM-250.
Standard Data
Standard IP Data service is a type of connection used for most of the applications which
provides 432 kbps at maximum based on the best effort.
When there are many active users while the linkage is in “busy status”, the bit rate will
be degraded compared with when there is less traffic.
Note that the speed types available for FELCOM-250 are 239 kbps/248 kbps.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
The address of the homepage which refers to the location of the information source
upon the Internet.
UDI (Unrestricted Digital Information)
An ISDN terminology which refers to the transmission capability for the digital
channels such as data, video conference, G4 fax, and Internet router.
This equipment establishes communication via the serial port. The communication
speed is 64 kbps, and the modem installed in the PC is the standard modem 33600 bps.
