Appendix 4. Abbreviations
AP4-7
OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) Reference Model
OIS reference model is a model where the communication functions expected for a
computer are divided into 7-layer structure.
Layer Description
Protocol reference
example
7. Application layer
(Presentation layer)
Specific communication services
(such as file or e-mail forwarding,
remote database accessing, etc.)
are provided. Communication
services such as HTTP or FTP, etc.
HTTP, DHCP, SMTP,
SNMP, FTP, Telnet, AFP,
X.500
6. Presentation layer
(Presentation layer)
Data expression method (for
example, converting a EBCDIC
coded text file to an ASCII coded
file)
SMTP, SNMP, FTP, Telnet,
AFP
5. Session layer
(Session layer)
The procedure from starting until
finishing the communication
between communication programs
(when connection is interrupted,
restoration will be attempted)
SSL, NetBIOS, NWLink,
DSI, ADSP, ZIP, ASP, PAP
4. Transport layer
(Transport layer)
Communication management
across the entire network (error
correction, control upon resending,
etc.)
TCP, UDP, SPX, NetBEUI,
RTMP, AURP, NBP, ATP,
AEP
3. Network layer
Network layer)
Selecting the communication path
within the network (routing). Data
relay
IP, ARP, RARP, ICMP, IPX,
NetBEUI, DDP, AARP
2. Data link layer
(Data link layer)
Delivery of signals between the
communication equipments
connected directly (adjacently)
Ethernet, Token ring,
ARCNET, PPP,
Frame relay
1. Physical layer
(Physical layer)
Physical connection. Specifications
and other information for the
number of connector pins and for
the connector formats. Converting
electrical signals between copper
cables and optical fibers.
RS-232, RS-422,
Telephone wire, UTP,
HUB, Repeater, Radio,
Optical fiber Cable
MAC Address (Media Access Control address)
MAC address is a physical address allocated for the hardware of the network
equipments such as LAN cards which are being set for the purpose of identifying each
node within the network.
When compared to the OSI reference model, it is equivalent with the media access
control addresses for the 2nd layer (data link layer).
MAC address is described using octet description 48 bit codes such as;
“04-A3-43-5F-43-23”.
Among this MAC address, the first 24 bit part “04-A3-43” is the vendor ID part, the
next 8 bit part “5F” if the model ID, and the last 16 bit part “43-23” is the serial ID in
general.
