1.2 Overview of the Fleet Broad Band (FB)
1-4
Satellite beam
The satellite beam is consisted of 3 different types of beams.
x 1 Global Beam for each ocean area (elevation angle: 10 degree or more)
x 19 Regional beams, each covering the area of the diameter of 3000 km
x Approx. 200 Narrow (Spot) beams, each covering the area of the diameter of 800
km (min. 200 km)
1) Global Beam
BGAN system information is provided to all BGAN user equipments via the Global
Beam Common Channel. The Global Beam is not used for the Return direction.
2) Regional beam
The Regional beam is used for registering the BGAN user equipments in the BGAN
system and for the SMS (Short Message Service).
Regional Beams are selected based on the GPS location information and on the Spot
beam map information in the Global Beam common channel.
3) Narrow Beam(Spot beam)
Narrow Beam is used for Standard IP data, Streaming IP data, Voice, ISDN, and
3.1 k Audio communication.
