CROSS SHAFT OIL GALLERY OUTLET
CHECK VALVE TESTING
1. To test the cross shaft oil gallery outlet check valve
that is pressed into the upper crankcase, attach a
hose
q
and Mity Vac hand pump to the external
center gallery check valve
w
.
2. The external center gallery check valve should hold
pressure up to 3 - 17 psi (20.7 - 117.2 kPa) and then
open.
NOTICE
When the engine crankcase is fully assembled and
sealed, the external center gallery check valve pop-off
pressure can vary between 3 - 17 psi (20.7 - 117.2 kPa)
because of the level of oil in the center gallery cavity.
When pressure testing the external center gallery check
valve, verify oil is not leaking from the crankcase weep
hole.
If the test results are outside if the specifications
listed above, the external center gallery check valve
and cross shaft oil gallery outlet check valve must be
replaced.

CHECK VALVE REPLACEMENT
1. Follow the following Engine Disassembly / Inspection
- Top End procedures:
• Remove the cylinder head. See Cylinder Head
Removal page 3.75.
• Remove the cylinder. See Cylinder Removal page
3.77.
• Remove the pistons. See Piston Removal page
3.80.
2. Remove the Recoil. See Recoil Housing Removal
page 3.103.
3. Follow the following Stator / Flywheel Service
procedures:
• Remove the flywheel. See Flywheel Removal /
Inspection page 3.65.
• Remove the stator. See Stator Removal /
Inspection page 3.66.
4. Remove the water pump cover fasteners and cover.
NOTICE
Discard the water pump cover seal.
5. Remove the ten inner crankcase fasteners
q
from
the locations indicated below.
NOTICE
The inner crankcase fasteners are longer than the outer
crankcase fasteners.
