b. Dry parts with compressed air.
2. Connecting rod bearings
a. Clean the connecting rod bearings in cleaning solvent. Do not scratch the bearing contact surfaces.
b. Wipe the bearings clean with a soft cloth.
c. Dry parts with compressed air.
3. Pistons
a. Clean the pistons in cleaning solvent.
b. Clean varnish from the piston skirt and pin with a suitable cleaning solvent.
c. Clean the piston ring grooves.
d. Clean the piston oil lubrication holes and slots.
e. Dry parts with compressed air.
4. Piston pin
a. Clean the parts in cleaning solvent.
b. Dry the parts with compressed air.
Main Bearing Inspection
This MerCruiser engine uses precision insert type main bearings. If the installed bearing clearance exceeds specification then
the bearing assembly must be replaced. Service bearings are available in standard size and 0.0508 mm (0.002 in.), 0.254 mm
(0.010 in.), and 0.508 mm (0.020 in.) undersized.
