STARTER MOTOR INSPECTION
Pinion Gear
1. Check the pinion gear for smooth operation while
rotating it on the shaft.
2. Check the gear teeth for wear. Replace the starter motor
if the gear teeth are worn or damaged.
3. Inspect the flywheel ring gear teeth if the pinion gear
teeth are damaged.
Replace the flywheel if necessary.
Do not apply any lubricant to the pinion gear or shaft.
Lubricant may cause the pinion to slip and/or may cause
damage to the clutch mechanism.
CLEANING AND INSPECTING THE PINION
DAMPER ASSEMBLY
1. Separate the pinion rubber damper from the drive plate.
Using your thumbs, push the pinion vertically on the
shaft, in the direction shown. Do not rotate the pinion
assembly.
2. Thoroughly clean between the drive plate and
damper using a rubber-compatible contact cleaner or
brake cleaner. Use a cotton swab or other utensil to
remove any residue from the damper rubber and drive
plate.
Do not use compressed air to remove residue as it may
force cleaner or debris into the starter gearbox.
3. After cleaning, verify no oil or grease residue is present
and the damper and drive plate are dry.
Allow it to dry for at least an hour before testing.
