DRIVE SYSTEM
TROUBLESHOOTING SYMPTOMS
1. Lawn mower will not self-propel when the drive
clutch lever is engaged.
a. Check the drive belt condition.
b. Inspect the transmission for leaks. If a leak is
visible, see “Transmission leaks oil.” on page 2-20
.
c. Check the transmission control arm movement. The
control arm should fully rotate when the shift lever
is in the fastest position and the drive clutch lever is
engaged.
Tilt the mower on its side (muffler side down). With
the help of an assistant, move the shift lever to the
fastest position, and engage the drive clutch lever.
Confirm the control arm fully rotates. If it doesn't
move or moves very little, inspect the drive clutch
cable for damage.
Clean any grass or debris from the control arm
spring, and apply HondaLube (or equivalent) to the
spring area. Repeatedly engage and release
the drive clutch lever until the arm operates smoothly.
d. Check the pinion gears (engine off).
With the drive clutch lever released:
• Push the lawn mower forward. You should hear a
clicking noise from the wheel ratchets and the
transmission axle should not rotate.
• Pull the lawn mower backwards. There should
not be any clicking noise from the wheel ratchets
and the transmission axle should rotate forward
opposite the wheels.
If either condition does not exist, inspect/repair
the wheel ratchets.
With the drive clutch lever engaged and the shift
lever in the fast position:
• Push the lawn mower forward. You should hear a
clicking noise from the wheel ratchets and the
transmission axle should not rotate.
• Pull the lawn mower backwards. The wheels
should lock up and the transmission axle should
not rotate.
If either condition does not exist, inspect/repair
the wheel ratchets.
e. If the mower still does not self-propel after
performing the above steps, remove the
transmission and proceed to the “TRANSMISSION
FLUID CHANGE AND BENCH TEST
PROCEDURE” on page 2-21
.
