d. If the control arm operates freely and the mower
cannot be rolled backwards or is difficult to roll
backwards, remove the rear adjusters and inspect
and clean the bushings. Thoroughly apply a coat of
Honda Marine extreme pressure NLGI #2 GC-LB
grease or equivalent INSIDE the adjuster arm
bushings and on the axle surfaces.
IMPORTANT:
Only use an extreme pressure NLGI #2 GC-LB wheel
bearing grease. Proper application of the correct
grease is critical to ensure proper operation.
DO NOT USE anti-seize, white lithium, silicone,
WD-40, or any other spray lubricant.
6. Transmission leaks oil.
a. Clean the transmission and identify the source of the
leak.
• If the leak is occurring at an axle or input shaft seal,
replace the seals.
• If the leak exists at either distributor plug, check the
plug torque to be sure it is tight.
TORQUE: 21 N•m (15 ft•lb)
If the plug is tight and still leaks, replace the sealing
washer and retorque.
• If the leak exists at the input shaft seal, remove the
pulley and measure the input shaft radial
(side-to-side) play at the end of the input shaft,
perpendicular to the axle, using a dial indicator and
magnetic base. Support the transmission in a vise as
shown. If the play exceeds the service limit, the HST
will require replacement.
Service limit: 0.4 mm (0.016 in)
Note: 1 ~ 2 mm of vertical end play is normal and is
no cause for concern.
b. After repairing the leak, proceed to the
“TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE AND BENCH
TEST PROCEDURE” on page 2-21
before reinstalling
in the lawn mower.
c. Leaks from other locations will probably require
transmission replacement.

SEALS
Inspect the axle shaft seals and input shaft seal for
signs of leakage. Replace if necessary.
