NIBPcuffselectionandplacement
Alwayschoosetheappropriatebloodpressuremeasurementsite.Inadultand
childpatients,theupperarmispreferredforconvenienceandbecausenormative
valuesaregenerallybasedonthissite.Whenfactorsprohibituseoftheupperarm,
theclinicianmustplanpatientcareaccordingly,takingintoaccountthepatient’s
cardiovascularstatusandtheeffectofanalternativesiteonbloodpressurevalues,
propercuffsize,andcomfort.
AdultandchildInfant
Alwaysmeasurepatient’slimbandselectappropriatelysizedcuffaccordingto
sizemarkedoncufforcuffpackaging.Whencuffsizesoverlapforaspecied
circumference,choosethelargersizecuff.
Ifpatientisstanding,sitting,orlying,ensurethatcuffedlimbissupportedtomaintain
thecuffatlevelofpatient’sheart.Ifthecuffisnotatheartlevel,thedifferenceinthe
measuredpressurevaluesduetohydrostaticeffectmustbeconsidered.
SelectingNIBPcuffsize
YoumustrstselecttheNIBPcuffsizebeforestartinganNIBPmeasurement.Thecuff
sizemustbeselectedforeachindividualpatient.
