Replacing parts

you must protect it reliably against rolling
away
3. Slacken off the wheel studs by a
1/2 turn
4. Attach the jack to the mounting point
nearest to the wheel which is to be
removed; the full surface area of the base
of the jack should make contact with the
ground, and the jack head should enter the
rectangular recess of the mounting point
(see picture detail) as the jack is raised
5. Continue to turn the crank handle until
the wheel you wish to change is lifted clear
of the ground
6. Take out the wheel studs and remove
the wheel
7. Remove heavy dirt deposits from the
wheel and hub contact faces and clean the
wheel studs
8. Offer up the new wheel and secure it
with at least two studs inserted on opposite
sides of the hub
9. Insert and screw up the remaining wheel
studs, then tighten them all firmly, working
across the hub rather than round it
10. Lower the car and remove the jack
11. Tighten the studs alternately on oppo-
site sides of the hub
12. Correct the tyre pressure at the earliest
opportunity.
Prevent dirt from entering the tyre
valves by attaching screw-on dust
caps. Dirt in the tyre valve can often lead to
a gradual loss of air pressure.
<
Cars with Tyre Pressure Control (RDC):
After fitting the spare wheel or correcting
the tyre pressure, initialise the system
again, see page 90.
Use the jack only for wheel changing.
Do not attempt to raise another type
of vehicle or any other load with this jack;
this could result in injury or damage.
For safety reasons, have the wheel stud
tightening torque checked without delay,
using a suitable calibrated torque wrench
correct tightening torque 140 Nm.
<
Proceed in the reverse sequence when
storing the wheel and tools.
If the car is not fitted with alloy wheels of
the Original BMW type, note that different
wheel studs may be needed.
Have a damaged tyre replaced as soon as
possible, and the new wheel and tyre rebal-
anced.
Battery
Maintenance
The battery needs no routine maintenance
whatsoever, in other words the quantity of
acid it contains will normally last for the full
operating life of the battery in temperate
climates.
Please address all queries concerning
the battery to your BMW Service. As
the battery is maintenance-free, the
following information is provided for refer-
ence only.
<
Recharging the battery
Recharge the battery only with the engine
switched off, via the connections in the
engine compartment. Connections, see
Starting with a flat battery on page 284.
Before undertaking any work on the
car's electrical system, disconnect
the lead from the negative terminal of the
battery in order to avoid the risk of short-
circuits and fire or injury.
