Starting the engine
Never run the engine in an enclosed
space. The exhaust gas contains
carbon monoxide, which is colourless and
odourless, but highly toxic. Inhaling
exhaust gas constitutes a severe health risk
and can lead to loss of consciousness with
fatal consequences.
Do not leave the car unattended with the
engine running, as this constitutes a
hazard.
<
1. Insert the remote control fully into the
ignition lock. It is not necessary to do this
with convenient access
2. Press the footbrake
3. Briefly press the start/stop button,
keeping the footbrake depressed.
You can release the footbrake as soon as
the engine has started.
Your BMW is equipped with a
convenient-start system. With the
footbrake depressed, it is sufficient to
press the start/stop button briefly.
The starter is then operated automatically
for a certain time, and operation likewise
ceases automatically as soon as the engine
has started. If the battery voltage is low,
automatic starting cannot be activated, or it
is interrupted. The engine can be started by
means of jump leads, see page 284.
From a speed of approx. 5 km/h (3 mph),
the engine is started at the push of a
button. The footbrake need not be
applied.
<
Do not warm up the engine with the car at a
standstill; it is preferable to set off straight
away, driving at moderate engine speeds.
Avoid starting, stopping and restar-
ting the engine in rapid succession or
repeated attempts to start the engine if it
does not fire, otherwise unburnedor only
partially combusted fuel could reach the
catalytic converter, which could overheat
and be damaged as a result.
<
Stopping the engine
With the car at a standstill, briefly press the
start/stop button. The radio ignition posi-
tion is active.
If for exceptional reasons you need to
switch off the engine while the car is
still moving, press the start/stop button for
about 1 second.
If you press the start/stop button for longer
than about 2 seconds when switching off
the ignition, the remote control is ejected a
short way.
<
Always take the remote control out of
the ignition lock before you leave the
car or, with convenient access, always take
the remote control with you.
