3. The bodies of the two vehicles must not
make contact risk of short-circuit
4. On your BMW, the jump-starting
connection in the engine compartment
serves as the battery's positive terminal.

is marked "+". Pull off the cap to expose the

First connect a jump lead to the positive
terminal of the flat battery, then to the posi-
tive terminal of the donor battery
5. With the second jump lead, establish a
connection between the negative terminals
of the two vehicles. First connect it to the
negative battery terminal or to earth
(ground) on the engine or body of the donor
vehicle, then to the negative battery
terminal or to earth (ground) on the engine
or body of the vehicle which you wish to
start. On your BMW a special nut is
provided for this purpose on the suspen-
sion strut housing, see arrow

tion
Always connect the jump leads in the
correct order, so that no sparks which
could cause injury occur at the battery.
<
6. Start the engine of the donor vehicle and
allow it to run for a few minutes at an
increased idle speed
7. Start the engine of the other vehicle in
the customary way. If an initial attempt to
start the engine fails, wait several minutes
until the flat battery has been recharged to
a slightly greater degree
8. Allow both engines to run for a few
minutes before disconnecting the jump
leads
9. Disconnect the jump leads in the oppo-
site order from that in which they were orig-
inally attached.
Have the battery checked and recharged
by BMW Service if necessary.
Towing away
Before towing away, always release
the automatic transmission's interlock
manually, even if there are no faults in the
transmission. There is otherwise the risk of
the interlock being engaged automatically
while the car is being towed.
<
Releasing the transmission interlock manu-
ally, see page 64.
Towing eye
The screw-in towing eye is kept in the car's
toolkit in the luggage compartment lid, see
page 278, and should always be carried on
the car. It can be screwed in at the front or
the rear of the car, and is only to be used for
towing on a firm road surface.
