P Park
Press the button. Engage this gear
only when the car is standing still. The
transmission interlock blocks the drive
wheels. The transmission interlock is
released when you push the selector lever
towards D, N or R with the engine running.
P is engaged automatically as soon as
you remove the remote control from
the ignition lock after switching off the
engine.

R Reverse
Press the selector lever up, beyond
the pressure point. Engage this gear only
when the car is standing still.
N Neutral
Press the selector lever as far as the
pressure point. Select only if the journey is
interrupted for a fairly long time.

In drive position D, press the selector
lever up

In drive position R, press the selector
lever down.
Observe the direction arrows in the
selector lever display.
N is engaged automatically if the
remote control remains engaged in
the ignition lock after the ignition has been
switched off. This function is useful e.g. in
the car wash.
P is engaged automatically after approx.
30 minutes. Observe the messages in the
Check Control.

D Drive (forward travel with
automatic transmission)
Press the selector lever down,
beyond the pressure point. Drive position
for all normal driving. All forward gears are
selected as necessary.
Kick-down
In the kick-down position, you achieve
maximum performance. Press the acceler-
ator pedal down beyond the regular full-
throttle position; increased resistance will
be felt.
Sport program and manual operation
If you press the S/M/D button on the
steering wheel, the Sport program is first
activated and displayed by means of S in
the program indicator in the info display,
see page 62. This program is recom-
mended for a driving style that places the
emphasis on performance.
If the S/M/D button is pressed a further
time, you enter the manual m ode, then a
further press returns you to the Automatic
program.
You can also move back to position D if you
wish to return to the standard Automatic
program.
If you briefly press the buttons on the back
of the steering wheel in the manual mode,
the transmission shifts up. When the
buttons on the front of the steering wheel
are briefly pressed, the transmission shifts
down. M1 to M6 appear in the info display.
Upshifts and downshifts are performed
only at a suitable engine or road speed; for
example, the transmission will not shift
down if the resulting engine speed would
