To avoid injuries, as with any closing
process, ensure that the closing area
of the luggage compartment lid is unob-
structed. Drive only with the lid fully closed
to prevent exhaust gases from entering the
passenger compartment. If it is necessary
to travel with the luggage compartment lid
open, observe the following precautions:

Close all other windows and the sliding/
tilt roof
>
Boost the airflow from the automatic air
conditioning outlets considerably; see
page 98.

Convenient access*
If a remote control is identified inside
the luggage compartment after it has
been locked, the luggage compartment lid
is unlocked automatically.
The luggage compartment lid swings rear-
wards and upwards when opened. Make
sure that there is sufficient clearance.

Emergency operation
in the event of an electrical fault
Unlock the luggage compartment lid with
the key, see page 35, and open and close it
slowly, without sudden movements.

Small objects can be stored in the net on
the bulkhead in the luggage compartment.
Alarm system

The principle
The alarm system reacts if:
>
A door, the engine compartment lid or
the luggage compartment lid are opened
>
If there is any movement inside the car
interior movement detector
>
If the car's angle changes, for instance if
an attempt is made to jack it up and steal
the wheels or to raise it prior to towing
away
>
There is an interruption in the power
supply from the battery.
Depending on the national-market version
of the car, the alarm system indicates unau-
thorised entry or tampering in different
ways:
>
Acoustic alarm sounds for approx.
30 seconds
>
The hazard warning flashers operate for
approx. five minutes

Activating and deactivating
Whenever the car is locked or unlocked,
either at the lock or with the remote control,
the alarm system is activated or deacti-
vated at the same time.
You can arrange for various kinds of
signal to be generated as confirma-
tion that the system has been activated and
deactivated correctly.

Even if the system has been activated, you
can open the luggage compartment lid by
pressing remote control button

page 32. When it is closed, the lid is auto-
matically protected again.
On certain national-market versions,
the alarm system can only be oper-
ated by the remote control. Opening these
cars with a key triggers off the alarm.

Engage the remote control in the ignition
lock.
