restraint system. If the airbag occupant
restraint system develops a fault, is shut
down out of use or has been triggered off in
an accident, have it checked, repaired or
dismantled only by BMW Service.
Never make any modifications to the indi-
vidual components of the system or its
wiring. This includes the upholstered
covers on the steering wheel, instrument
panel, side panels on front or rear doors
and roof struts as well as down the sides of
the roof liners. Do not remove the steering
wheel. In order to comply with valid safety
regulations, have airbag generators
scrapped only by BMW Service. Any care-
less or unskilled interference with the
system could lead to its failure or to acci-
dental triggering off with the risk of injury.
Avoid touching the system's components
immediately after it has been triggered off,
as there is a risk of sustaining burns.
<
Indicator light
The indictor light confirms that the
airbag system and belt tensioner
are ready to operate, from the radio
ignition position onwards.
System operational:
>
The indicator light comes on briefly.
System defective:
>
The indicator light does not come on, or
>
the indicator light is on permanently.
If there is a system fault, there is a risk that
it will not be triggered off even if a suffi-
ciently severe accident occurs within the
airbag range.
Please have the airbag system checked by
BMW Service without delay.
Carrying children in safety
Children under 12 years of age or smaller
than 150 cm (approx. 5 ft) tall should travel
only on the rear seat, and wear suitable
child restraint systems.
If the car is equipped with electrically
adjusted rear seats, the rear seat
must be restored to its basic position
before fitting a child restraint system, see
page 44.
Always press the safety switch for the
window lifts, see page 39, if children are
travelling on the rear seat. The safety
switch also prevents the electric rear seats
from being adjusted. Uncontrolled
adjusting of the electric rear seats can
result in injury or damage the child restraint
system.
<
Child restraint systems
BMW Service can supply suitable child
restraint systems for every age and weight
group.
All the seats of your BMW, except for the
driver's seat, are fundamentally suitable for
the installation of universal child restraint
systems for all age groups, provided these
have been approved for the age group in
question.
If a child is to travel on the front
passenger's seat, the airbags on the
front passenger's side must be disabled
before a child restraint system is fitted to
that seat. BMW Service will be pleased to
advise you on this.
If the airbags are active, do not allow
children to travel on the front
passenger's seat, including when sitting on
the lap of another person or wearing a child
restraint system, as there is the risk of injury
if the airbags are triggered off.
If the car has rear side airbags, do not allow
children travelling in child seats to lean out
towards the door trim, as serious injuries
could occur if the airbag were to be trig-
gered off.
Observe the notes on installation and use
provided by the manufacturer of the child
restraint system, to uphold its protective
effect.
Following an accident, have all compo-
nents of the child restraint system and the
seat belt that was used to secure it
checked by BMW Service and renewed if
necessary.
