Chapter 1
Open Versus Closed System
Series A Terminals
On Series A terminals, you can configure a terminal to run an open or closed
desktop environment:
• An open system launches the Windows CE desktop on startup.
• A closed system launches a FactoryTalk View Machine Edition
application or FactoryTalk View Machine Edition Station on startup.
Desktop access is restricted.
Series A terminals are shipped as closed systems with desktop access disabled.
The first time that you start the system, the terminal launches FactoryTalk
View ME Station Configuration mode. At this point, you can change the start-
up option and allow desktop access.
Series B Terminals
(1)
Series B terminals are shipped as closed systems and there is no desktop
available on the Windows 10 IoT Core operating system.
Desktop Access
Series A Terminals
On Series A terminals, you can allow or restrict access to the Windows desktop
on the terminal. From the desktop, you can perform system and control panel
operations, use Microsoft® file viewers, run third-party applications, and launch
the web browser. You can also provide temporary access to perform specific
tasks, then disable desktop access to help prevent unauthorized changes.
See Windows CE Desktop A
ccess — Series A Terminals on page 79 for details
on how to modify desktop access.
Series B Terminals
(1)
Series B terminals do not have a desktop. When you exit Machine Edition, a
Windows 10 Control Panel launches.
(1) Series C for Stainless Steel terminals.
TIP All terminals are initially shipped with desktop access disabled.
