DRIVE BELT TENSION
Checking the drive belt tension

Securely support the vehicle so that there is
no danger of it falling over.

A drive belt that is too tight will overload the
engine and other vital parts, and one that is
too loose can skip and damage the swing-
arm or cause an accident. Therefore, keep
the drive belt tension within the specified
limits.
Measure the drive belt tension when the drive
belt is at room temperature, and when the drive
belt is dry.
1. Stand the vehicle on a level surface.
Place the vehicle on the centerstand.
2. Remove the drive belt upper guard.
Refer to “REAR WHEEL” on page 4-30.
3. Tap the drive belt and measure the vibration
frequency.
• Drive belt tension (vibration frequency)
Out of specification Adjust.
Before using the tension meter, read the instruc-
tion manual.
a. Face the microphone part “1” of the tension
meter to the drive belt.
b. Position the microphone part of the tension
meter on the belt within 10 mm (0.39 in).
c. Set the microphone part of the tension me-
ter at the intermediate distance between
the drive pulley and the rear wheel pulley.
d. Tap with the suitable stick “2” to vibrate the
belt.
