Folding mirrors

in and out
Press button

once to fold the mirrors in
and again to fold them out. This can for
example be useful in car washes or narrow
streets, or for instance to fold the mirrors
back out into the correct position after they
have been folded in manually.
The mirrors can be folded in at road
speeds of up to approx. 20 km/h
(12 mph).
<
Before putting the car through a car-
wash, fold the mirrors in either manu-
ally or by pressing button
3
. Otherwise they
could be damaged on account of the
vehicle width.
<
If you wish, the mirrors can be folded
in automatically when the car is
locked via the convenience function. The
mirrors are then automatically folded out
again when you unlock the car. You can
have this setting programmed.
<
The mirrors can also be adjusted manually
by pressing the edge of the glass.
To memorise mirror positions, see Seat,
mirror and steering wheel memory,
page 51.
The outer, aspherically curved
*
section of
the mirrors displays a larger field of view,
though slightly distorted, than the inner,
convex
*
section. In this way, the view to
the rear is extended and the blind spot, as it
is known, is reduced in size.
The mirror on the passenger's side is
more convex than the mirror on the
driver's side. Reflected objects are closer
than they appear. This makes it more diffi-
cult to estimate the distance at which
another vehicle is following you. The same
applies to the outer aspherical section of
the mirrors.

Electric mirror heating
Both mirrors are automatically heated
when the ignition is switched on and when
the auxiliary heater is running.
Inside mirror
To reduce glare from following vehicles
after dark, tilt the mirror image by moving
the small lever.
Cars with alarm system:
Twist the knob on the underside of the
mirror.
Inside and outside mirrors,
automatic-dip
*
These mirrors are dimmed continuously
and automatically on the basis of the differ-
ence between ambient light and the light
striking them from the headlights of vehi-
cles following on behind. There are two
photo-cells in the inside mirror for this
purpose. One photo-cell is in the mirror
glass, see arrow, the other slightly offset on
the back of the mirror.
The mirrors automatically revert to the
clear, non-dimmed position when you
engage transmission position R.
To ensure that the mirrors operate
correctly, keep the photo-cells clean
and do not place any obstructions
(including stickers or permits) between the
inside mirror and the w indscreen.
