Controlled-temperature air for pleasant interior conditions
98
Temperature control
You can turn this to select
separate temperature settings
on the driver's and passenger's
sides of the car. Your settings
appear in the status line of the
control display. The displayed values are a
guide to the actual interior temperature.
Duringthe journey,the chosen temperature
is reached as quickly as possible in
summer and in winter and maintained at a
constant value.
Defrosting and demisting windows
This program removes ice and
condensation quickly from the
windscreen and from the side
windows.
Adjusting air supply manually
Turn to vary the air supply. If
your setting is displayed by
means of a bar in the status line
of the control display, the auto-
matic function for the air supply
is switched off. The automatic air distribu-
tion setting is retained unchanged.
However, you can switch the automatic
function for the air supply back on by
pressing the AUTO button.
Air conditioning
Air is cooled and dried when
the air conditioning is switched
on, then re-heated to suit the
temperature setting. Depending on
weather conditions, the windscreen may
fog over momentarily when the engine is
started.
The air conditioning is switched on auto-
matically when you use the AUTO program.
Maximum cooling effect
This program rapidly achieves
the maximum cooling effect.
The temperature display jumps

, the system switches to
the recirculated-air mode and air emerges
at the maximum flow rate from the ventila-
tion grilles only. Be sure to keep these
grilles open when you select this program.
Outside air/Automatic Recirculated
Air Control (AUC)/recirculated air
If the air outside the car has an
unpleasant odour or contains
pollutants, you can shut off the
supply to the interior of the car temporarily.
The air inside the car is then recirculated.
AUC does this for you automatically.
Three operating modes can be obtained in
succession by pressing this button repeat-
edly:
>
Indicator lights off: airflow from outside
the car
>
Left-hand indicator light on AUC oper-
ation: the system identifies pollutants in the
outside air and shuts off the supply if
necessary. The air inside the car is recircu-
lated.
After this, the automatic system switches
between outside air supply and recircu-
lated air according to the available air
quality
>
Right-hand indicator light on recircu-
lated-air mode: the outside air supply is
permanently shut off. The air inside the car
is recirculated.
If the windows fog over in the recircu-
lated air mode, switch it off and, if
necessary, increase the airflow.

Residual heat utilisation
Heat from the engine is stored
and used to heat the car's inte-
rior when the ignition is
switched off, for instance when
waiting at a level crossing. You
can alter the automatic air conditioning
setting with the ignition in the radio posi-
tion. When the ignition is switched off, the
heated air is led into the interior compart-
ment in accordance with the selected air
distribution settings.
You can use this function for up to
15 minutes after switching off the
ignition if the engine is warm and the
battery is sufficiently well charged. The
