For rapid acceleration in the manual
operating mode, for example when
overtaking, shift down manually or by using
the kick-down.

Malfunctions
If a malfunction occurs in the transmission
system, a message appears in the Check
Control. Also observe the supplementary
information provided in the control display.
The direction arrows in the info display in
addition flash.
All lever positions can still be selected, but
in the forward positions only certain gears
are actually available when the car is
driven.
Depending on the cause of the fault, it is no
longer possible to select all drive positions.
The engine's output while moving away
may be reduced.
Avoid excessive loads, and take the car to
the nearest BMW Service.
If the indicator in the info display has
failed, move away cautiously to
ensure that the car is travelling in the
desired direction. Do not work in the engine
compartment with the selector lever in a
drive position, in case the car begins to
move unexpectedly. Apply the parking
brake, see page 58.

Manual release of the transmission
interlock
In the event of power failure, e.g. if the
battery is flat or disconnected, or if there is
an electrical fault, you can release the
transmission interlock manually.
Before the car can be towed away,
the transmission interlock must
always be released manually, otherwise the
driven wheels will be blocked.
<
When releasing the transmission
interlock manually, press the foot-
brake. There is otherwise a risk of the car
rolling away when the transmission inter-
lock is released manually, depending on
how steep the slope is.
Only release the transmission interlock
manually for towing away the car. Engage
the transmission interlock again after
parking the car.
If the parking brake likewise has to be
released manually, e.g. in the event of a flat
battery, always adhere to the following
sequence:
1. First release the parking brake manually,
see page 60
2. Then release the automatic transmis-
sion's interlock manually.
<
Jump-starting and towing away, see
pages 284 and 285.
Unlocking
1. Release the cover on the underside of
the instrument panel and fold it down. To
do this, turn the white rotary catch anti-
clockwise e.g. with the aid of a coin
2. Pull out the release lever with loop
1
until it engages the transmission interlock
is released.
Engage the transmission interlock
again after parking the car.
There is otherwise a risk of the car rolling
away when the parking brake is released
