Parking brake
The principle
Your BMW is fitted with an electro-
mechanical parking brake.
The main purpose of the parking brake is to
prevent the vehicle from rolling away when
stationary.
You can operate or use the parking brake in
two ways:
>
Manually, by pressing the button briefly
>
Automatically, by activating Automatic
Hold, see page 58.
As soon as you switch off the engine, the
parking brake is applied electro-mechani-
cally to the rear wheels.
When the engine is running, the parking
brake acts on the disc brakes of the front
and rear wheels via the brake hydraulics.
Braking sensation
As a result of the brakes being applied by
the brake hydraulics, the sensation
produced when the car is braked may be
slightly unaccustomed. Any noises gener-
ated during this process are normal.
Applying the brake manually
Briefly press the button; the
logo PARK in the info display
lights up briefly. When the
parking brake is applied, the
indicator light in the info
display lights up red, see page 12.
When the ignition is switched off, the
indicator light goes out after a
short time.
<
Releasing the brake manually
Briefly press the button with the
ignition switched on; the indi-
cator light in the info display
goes out.
You can also release the parking
brake after switching off the engine
provided the remote control is still engaged
in the ignition lock. This function is useful
e.g. in the car wash.
<
When leaving the car, always remove
the remote control from the ignition
lock, otherwise any children remaining in
the car could for instance release the
parking brake.
With the remote control removed, the
parking brake can be applied at any time.
However, it cannot be released unless the
ignition is switched on.
<
If for exceptional reasons it is neces-
sary to apply the parking brake while
on the move, hold the button pressed in.
The indicator light in the info display lights
up red. A gong signal is simultaneously
given.
The brake lights come on.
The car is braked automatically for as long
the button is held pressed in.
<
If you brake the car almost to a stand-
still (approx. 3 km/h/2 mph), the
parking brake remains on.
The indicator light in the info display
lights up red. Briefly press the button to
release the parking brake manually.
<
Automatic Hold
After the engine has been started, this can
be activated until the engine is switched off
again.
You can support this function while on the
move by automatically applying and
releasing the parking brake, e.g. when
stopping at traffic lights or in stop-and-go
traffic. The car need not be held using the
footbrake, as its tendency to creep along
with a drive position engaged is
suppressed.
