6.11 UAT (ADS-B) TRAFFIC
TheoptionalGarminGDL90isaUniversalAccessTransceiver(UAT).Itprovidesdatalinktrafcinformation
tothedisplaysusingAutomaticDependentSurveillance-Broadcast(ADS-B)symbols.Theunitalsointegrates
aGPSSBAS(SatelliteBasedAugmentationSystem)receiver.

When the GDL 90 is operating, it automatically broadcasts a report approximately once per second
containingtheaircraft’sGPSposition,velocity,altitude,identication,andotherinformationonthe978MHz
UATfrequency.ItalsocanreceivereportsfromothernearbyUAT-equippedaircraft,inadditiontotrafcand
weatherserviceswhenwithinline-of-sightreceptionofADS-BGround-BasedTransceivers(GBTs).
ADS-B SYSTEM
ADS-Bisasurveillancetechnologybeingwidelydeployed.Itisdesignedtoenhancepilotandairtrafc
controller situational awareness of traffic, especially in areas where radar is ineffective due to terrain or where
itisimpracticalortoocostly.InitialapplicationsofADS-Bareforadvisoryuseonly,toenhanceapilot’svisual
acquisitionofothernearbyequippedaircrafteitherwhenairborneorontheairportsurface.
UAT systems, such as the GDL 90, represent one component of the ADS-B system. UAT technology is
intendedprimarilyforaircraftoperatingbelow18,000feet.NogroundinfrastructureisnecessaryforaUAT-
equippedaircrafttodetectanothernearbyaircrafttransmittingontheUATfrequency.
AsecondcomponentoftheADS-Bsystemare1090MHzExtendedSquitter(1090ES)transponders.The
1090ESsystemisintendedprimarilyforaircraftoperatingatorabove18,000feet.1090EStransponders
broadcastaircraftpositionreportscomparabletoUATreports,butonthe1090MHz(ModeS)frequency.An
aircraftbroadcastinga1090ESreportmaydetectothernearby1090EStrafcwithoutgroundinfrastructure,
providedtheaircrafthasADS-BIncapabilityneededtodisplay1090EStrafc.
Itisimportanttonote,however,thatUAT-onlyaircraftand1090ES-onlyaircraftcannotdetecteachother
directlywithoutthepresenceofaGBT.TheGBTreceivesbothUATand1090ESreports,andthenbroadcasts
thecombinedtrafcdataforbothUATand1090ESaircraftwithinline-of-sightreceptionoftheUAT.This
GBTserviceisknownasADS-Rebroadcast(ADS-R).TheGBTsalsoprovidethistrafcdatatoairtrafccontrol
(ATC)facilities.
